When a cypress hedge finally comes out, the ground it leaves is dry, root-filled and impoverished, and the obvious mistake is to plant straight back into it. The soil wants opening up and feeding first. Replacements that suit the conditions and stay manageable include hornbeam, beech on the better ground, holly, or a mixed native run where a wildlife boundary is wanted.
