Gardening Services Near You in North Sheen

Whether a garden job in North Sheen takes a morning or a full day is usually decided at the front door. Much of the terraced stock here has no side return, no rear alley and no gate to the back, so every tool, every bag of compost and every barrow load of prunings travels through the hall, past the kitchen and out again the same way. Crews who plan for that get the work done; crews who discover it on arrival spend half the day carrying things and the other half apologising for the state of the floor.

Measuring the route before the garden

The useful survey is of the house, not the plot. Width of the front door and the rear door, the turn at the bottom of the stairs, whether the back door is a full-width opening or a narrow one, how many steps down to the garden, and what the floor is made of. Those measurements determine machine size, whether a mower goes through at all, and how material is moved: a wheelbarrow through a Victorian hallway is rarely possible, so bulk moves in builders' bags and buckets instead, which changes the labour on a job dramatically.

Protecting what the work passes through

Everything on the route gets covered before anything comes in: heavy-duty sheeting taped down on hard floors, board over the threshold, corner protection where a long-handled tool has to turn. The order of work changes too. Material that will be leaving is stacked at the garden end, bagged, then moved in one deliberate run at the close rather than dribbled through the house hour by hour.

What cannot come in at all

A ride-on mower, a chipper and a powered soil cultivator are simply not going into a terraced house, and neither is a full-size skip anywhere near the back garden. That rules out some approaches and makes others more attractive: hand tools and battery machines, hedge reduction spread across more visits, chipping replaced by cutting material down to bag size, and soil improvement by surface mulching instead of cultivation. Where a large volume genuinely has to leave, the practical answer is bagging in the garden and a crew with a vehicle parked as close as the street allows, such as man and van throughout North Sheen.

The street outside is part of the job

Permit-only parking with no loading exemption is the other constraint, and it has real consequences: a vehicle that cannot stand near the house means everything is carried further, and a visit that could have been three hours becomes five. Neighbouring streets with driveways and side access are a different proposition entirely, and that work is covered by hedge trimming services in Richmond.

Bins, side returns and the strip beside the kitchen

Where there is a narrow return beside the kitchen extension, it usually holds bins, a bike and whatever did not fit in the shed. It is also permanently shaded, damp and directly against the house wall, which makes it the one part of the garden where clutter has consequences: cover and food waste against a wall with air bricks in it is exactly what draws rodents inside, and dealing with that is work for North Sheen pest control service. Keeping the return swept, clear of stacked material and free of growth against the brickwork is a small task with a large benefit.

Small gardens, frequent visits

The gardens themselves are typically a courtyard, a strip of lawn and two narrow borders, and they suit short regular visits rather than occasional long ones. In a space that size, one overgrown shrub unbalances everything, so the work is mostly editing: cutting back to keep proportion, replacing a plant that has outgrown its position, keeping the edges crisp and the paving clear. The paving is a large proportion of what is visible, and where it has greened over it is restored separately, which comes under Richmond decking cleaning.

What to sort out before the first visit

Visits are priced by the time on site, so the access arrangements directly affect what a job costs, and an honest description of the route through the house is more useful than photographs of the garden. Helpful preparation is simple: a clear hallway, pets shut away from the working route, somewhere in the garden where bagged material can stand between visits, and a decision about whether the crew holds a key or works by appointment. Where a garden needs a full reset rather than upkeep, that is planned as a series of visits, with the sequence set out in our national garden maintenance service.
