A carpet that has pulled away from the gripper rods, leaving a gap at the skirting and a ripple across the floor, has almost always been over-wetted. It is the most expensive mistake in this trade and it happens most often in exactly the housing Islington is built from: Georgian and early Victorian terraces with hessian-backed wool carpet laid on original boards. The jute shrinks as it dries, the carpet contracts with it, and no amount of re-stretching afterwards fully restores what the fitter originally set.
How much water is the right amount
Good extraction is a balance between what goes down and what comes back. The solution needs to reach the base of the tuft, and the vacuum needs to recover the great majority of it on the same stroke, which depends on pass speed, the condition of the tool's jets and lip, and the length of the hose run. Slow, overlapping strokes with dry passes between them put a carpet back in a state where the backing is barely damp. Fast passes with the trigger held open soak the backing and leave the fibre looking clean until it dries.
Natural backings, latex and delamination
Older carpets are built in two layers held together with a latex adhesive, and that adhesive degrades with age. Excess water and high alkalinity accelerate it, and once the secondary backing separates the carpet ripples and the pile feels spongy underfoot. Nothing repairs delamination. Identifying an at-risk carpet by its age, its backing and the sound it makes when the pile is parted is part of the assessment, and on a carpet in that condition a low-moisture method is the only responsible choice.
Lower ground floors and the damp that was already there
Basement and lower-ground rooms sit against retaining soil, and in a terrace of this age the wall construction is solid with no cavity. Carpet laid over a slab in that situation can carry a background moisture load before anyone arrives. Readings are taken first, so that pre-existing damp is on record rather than attributed to the clean, and where the readings are high the honest answer is to deal with the cause before spending money on the floor. Period rooms where the floor is part of the fabric
Many properties here sit within conservation areas and a proportion are listed, where original boards, staircases and skirtings matter. Water finding its way between boards can lift a wax finish, stain the timber and reach the joists, so equipment is set up with that in mind and spill trays go under anything that holds liquid.
Drying properly rather than quickly
Air movement across the surface, a modest temperature and an open internal door do more than a hot radiator in a closed room. Furniture stays off the carpet until a meter reading confirms the backing is dry, not merely the tips of the pile, which in a tall-ceilinged room can take longer than people expect.
When re-stretching is the honest recommendation
A carpet that already ripples before anyone cleans it has usually relaxed with age or was never power-stretched properly at fitting. Cleaning will not remove a ripple and may make it briefly more obvious while the carpet is damp. The remedy is a fitter with a power stretcher and, if the gripper has failed along a wall, new gripper before the carpet is re-laid. Pointing that out at the survey, rather than after a customer notices a wave across their sitting room, avoids an argument that the cleaning did not cause.
