Between two professional visits, a carpet is maintained almost entirely by a machine bought in a hurry and used without much thought. That machine does more to determine how long the floor lasts than anything a technician does once a year, because the overwhelming majority of what damages carpet is dry, abrasive and removable — if it is removed before it works its way to the base of the pile. Suction alone does not empty a pile
Airflow lifts material that is loose. It does very little about material that has been trodden between tufts and is held there by friction and by the oily film that coats everything in a house. Releasing that requires agitation: a rotating brush that flexes the pile and breaks the contact, so the airflow has something to carry away. A cylinder machine with a plain floor head is excellent on hard floors and on flat-woven coverings, and noticeably weak on a deep cut pile, which is why a house with both usually needs two heads rather than two machines. Height setting is not decoration
A brush set too high skims the tips and achieves little. Set too low, it works against the pile instead of through it, generating heat, fuzzing the yarn tips and wasting motor life. The setting exists because a low-level loop and a deep saxony need entirely different clearances, and most people never move it from wherever it arrived. Adjusting it until the machine sounds as though it is working but not labouring takes a minute and changes what comes out.
The carpets a beater bar should not meet
Loop pile is the exception that matters. A stiff rotating brush can catch a loop and pull it, which on a continuous loop construction starts a run that will not stop on its own. Berber-style loops, many wool loop carpets and most natural-fibre coverings are safer with suction only, or with a soft brush turned off. The same applies to the fringes of a rug, which wrap around a brush roll and shear instantly. Where a loop has already been pulled, it is trimmed level rather than removed. Passes, direction and speed
A single pass over a hall takes out a fraction of what is available. The pile lies in a direction, and material sits behind the tufts on the side the airflow is not reaching, so working in two directions at right angles removes considerably more than working twice in the same line. Speed matters as much as repetition: the head has to stay in contact long enough for the air to move through the pile, and a slow draw back towards the body does most of the useful work. Entrance areas justify several passes; a spare bedroom does not.
Filtration and the bag nobody changes
A full bag or a clogged filter reduces airflow long before the machine stops picking things up, and by then the fine material is being redistributed rather than captured. Emptying a bagless cylinder when it looks full is too late; filters need washing or replacing on the schedule the manufacturer states. For a household with allergies this is the part that matters most, because it governs what goes back into the room rather than what comes out of the carpet. Where a domestic machine stops
No vacuum removes the oily binder that holds fine particles to the fibre, and nothing dry reaches material that has already packed around the tuft anchors. That is what a periodic deep clean is for, and a well-vacuumed carpet cleans faster, rinses cleaner and dries sooner, which is why a technician vacuums thoroughly before starting regardless of what has been done beforehand.
