The first ten minutes of a carpet cleaning job decide the result, and none of it involves a machine. What matters is identifying the fibre, reading the backing, finding out what has been spilt and what was put on it afterwards, and taking a moisture reading in the rooms that look suspect. North London's housing runs from Georgian terraces to post-war blocks to new flats above shops, and the same method applied blindly across all of them will damage at least one.
Identifying the fibre without guessing
Wool feels soft and slightly springy, chars rather than melts, and smells of burnt hair from a single tuft tested in a safe corner. Nylon melts into a hard bead and takes acid dyes, which is why it stains with squash and why those stains can be reduced. Polypropylene will not absorb water-based dye at all but holds oil, and it melts at a low enough temperature that aggressive dry agitation can glaze it. Polyester feels slick and releases greasy soil badly. Each of those facts changes the chemistry, the heat and the agitation used.
Reading the back as well as the front
Lifting a corner at a doorway takes seconds and tells you whether the backing is jute, which shrinks and browns, or a synthetic weave, which does not. It also shows the age and condition of the latex bonding the layers, the state of the underlay, and whether the floor beneath is boards, chipboard or concrete. All four change how much water is safe and how long drying will take.
Choosing between extraction, encapsulation and dry compound
Hot rinse extraction removes the most soil and needs the most drying time, so it suits a genuinely soiled carpet in a room that can be left alone. Encapsulation uses little water, dries in an hour or two and suits maintenance cleaning and commercial loop pile. Dry compound is for natural plant fibres and for situations where no moisture is acceptable at all. None of the three is universally better, and a cleaner who only offers one is choosing for their own convenience.
The test patch, and why it is not a formality
A small area in an inconspicuous place, cleaned and dried, shows colourfastness, how much soil will actually come out and whether any texture change occurs. On an older or an unusual carpet it also sets a realistic expectation before a whole room is committed. Where the test shows dye movement or a fibre reacting badly, the plan changes then rather than halfway through the lounge.
What a survey turns up that a phone call cannot
Traffic lane wear, filtration lines at the skirting, pet contamination detectable under ultraviolet light, previous spot treatments that have left residue rings, and moisture at an external wall are all things a householder either has not noticed or has not thought worth mentioning. Being specific about which of these can be fully resolved, partly improved or not helped at all is the difference between a satisfied customer and an argument. Carpets in the immediately neighbouring district come under our specialists in the area.
What a well-equipped van actually carries
The visible machine is the least interesting part of the kit. What determines the outcome is the range of chemistry on board: a wool-safe pre-conditioner, an alkaline builder for greasy synthetic carpet, a solvent for filtration marks and ink, a tannin treatment, a rust remover, an acid rinse and an enzyme product for protein spills. Add a counter-rotating brush, a hand tool for stairs, a subsurface urine tool, a moisture meter, an ultraviolet lamp, air movers and a carpet rake, and most situations can be handled correctly on the first visit rather than deferred.
How a job is quoted and what happens on the day
Quotes count rooms, halls and flights of stairs rather than an hourly rate, with specialist treatments itemised separately after the survey. Small furniture, floor-level cables and anything fragile want moving in advance, and the technician needs a tap, a socket and reasonable parking. Fabric furniture is a separate discipline handled under our North London team, regular household support through professional cleaning services in North London and the team covering Barnsbury, and the full method reference sits on trusted carpet stain removal.
