Woking is a borough and town located in northwest Surrey, England, situated approximately 22 miles (35 km) from central London. Its name, "Woking," appears as "Wochinges" in the Domesday Book and is believed to have originated from a Saxon landowner. The region has a rich history of human activity dating back to the Paleolithic era. However, due to the low fertility of the local sandy soils, it was the least populated part of the county in 1086. During the period from the mid-17th to the mid-19th centuries, Woking witnessed the establishment of various transport links, which contributed to its development. These included the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal, and the London to Southampton railway line. In the mid-1860s, the London Necropolis Company commenced the sale of surplus land surrounding the railway station for development purposes. This led to the formation and growth of the present-day town of Woking.
