Situated in the northwest of Surrey, England, approximately 22 miles (35 km) away from central London, Woking is a borough and town known as "Wochinges" in the Domesday Book, possibly deriving its name from a Saxon landowner. The area has a history of human activity dating back to the Paleolithic era. However, due to the low fertility of the local sandy soils, it was the least densely populated part of the county in 1086. In the mid-17th to the mid-19th centuries, several transportation connections were established, including the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal, and the London to Southampton railway line. In the mid-1860s, the London Necropolis Company initiated the sale of surplus land surrounding the railway station for development, resulting in the formation of the present-day town.
