Reclaim Your Free Time - Let the Preston Gardeners Handle Your Gardening Needs!

A lawn can be entirely green and contain very little grass. By the second week of May the flat rosettes have spread wide enough to shade out whatever is beneath them, the creeping things have run their stems out from the edges, and mowing keeps the whole lot neatly at the same height while doing nothing to reduce it. On the HA9 semis with a decent rectangle of lawn front and back, this is the most common complaint of the season, and it is nearly always treated before it is understood.

Two habits, two problems

Lawn weeds fall into two groups and the distinction decides everything. Rosette formers sit flat against the surface on a central taproot, mowing over the top of them: dandelion, ribwort plantain, catsear and the daisy. Creepers run horizontal stems across the surface and root as they go: clover, creeping buttercup, selfheal and speedwell. Pulling at a rosette leaves the root and the plant returns within weeks. Pulling at a creeper takes a length of stem and leaves a dozen rooted points behind.

Why they are winning

None of these plants outcompetes healthy grass in open ground. They arrive where grass has been weakened, and there is usually a specific reason. Cutting too short removes the leaf the grass needs and exposes soil to light. Compacted ground from a summer of use favours plantain, which tolerates it better than any grass. Wet corners suit creeping buttercup. A lawn short of nitrogen suits clover, which makes its own. The useful question is not what to spray but which of those conditions applies, because the answer returns every year otherwise.

Taking them out by hand

Hand weeding a lawn is realistic on a modest area and remains the cleanest approach. A long narrow grubbing knife pushed alongside a taproot and levered lifts a dandelion whole, and a taproot snapped halfway simply regrows, so the work is done after rain when the ground releases them. The resulting hole is closed with a pinch of soil and a few seeds, because a bare patch left open is an invitation for the next one. Creeping weeds are lifted with a fork under the whole mat rather than pulled.

Selective treatments, and the conditions they need

Products that kill broadleaf plants without harming grass only work on weeds in active growth, which means warm, moist conditions rather than a dry June or a cold March. They are watered in by nothing and washed off by rain, so a dry day with rain not expected for a while is required. Taprooted weeds usually need a second application several weeks later. Nothing of the sort goes onto a lawn in its first season, and children and pets stay off until the treatment has dried. Spot treatment of individual weeds is frequently more sensible than covering an entire lawn.

Where the next generation comes from

Seed arrives constantly and only establishes where there is bare soil. Molehills, scrapes and the fine tilth they leave are among the commonest entry points, and where that activity is persistent it is dealt with by Fantastic Services. Paving alongside a lawn is another reservoir, since weeds seeding in the joints shed straight onto the grass, and clearing those surfaces properly is work for pressure washing services in Edgware. The strip along a fence line, usually cut badly and compacted by feet, is the third.

The clover question

Clover is worth a separate thought rather than automatic removal. It stays green through a drought that browns the grass around it, it feeds nitrogen into the soil, and it flowers for insects. Plenty of households decide to keep it once that is explained, and some deliberately add it. What it will not do is take wear, and it stains clothing on a summer lawn, so the decision depends on how the lawn is used rather than on how it looks in a photograph.

Closing the gaps for good

The durable answer is a thicker sward: raising the cutting height, feeding at the right points in the year, relieving compaction where it exists, and overseeding thin areas in early autumn so that grass occupies the space first. A lawn badly infested may be better renovated than treated, and the material raked out of that process is bulky enough that removal is arranged through Fantastic Services. Work is quoted on the measured area for treatments and by duration for hand weeding, with the same approach taken on rounds nearby covered by garden maintenance services in Wembley, and how visits are arranged through the season is explained on our garden maintenance team.
