In bygone times, Kirkliston was a part of West Lothian County, but presently it falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh council. Situated on elevated terrain just north of a bend in the Almond River, which heads northward, it lies on the former route connecting Edinburgh and Linlithgow. Among the locals, Kirkliston is affectionately known as "Cheesetown," a moniker first recorded in 1902. While one theory suggests that the name originated from a verse by Burns, the most widely accepted explanation is that the workers who were involved in constructing the Forth Bridge and resided in Kirkliston commonly had cheese sandwiches for their midday meal.
