Devizes, situated in the picturesque county of Wiltshire, England, is both a civil parish and a bustling market town. The town's origins can be traced back to the magnificent Devizes Castle, a Norman stronghold constructed in the 11th century. In 1141, Devizes was granted a charter, signifying its growing importance and granting it certain privileges. During the tumultuous period known as the Anarchy, a 12th-century civil war between Stephen of England and Empress Matilda, the castle faced a siege. However, it withstood the test of time. In the later years, during the English Civil War, the Cavaliers successfully lifted the siege at the Battle of Roundway Down, demonstrating their resilience. Unfortunately, the castle met its demise in 1648 when Parliament ordered its destruction. Today, only fragments remain as a testament to its former grandeur.
