Devizes is a civil parish and market town located in Wiltshire, England. The town developed around Devizes Castle, a Norman castle built in the 11th century. In 1141, Devizes received a charter. During the Anarchy, which was a 12th-century civil war between Stephen of England and Empress Matilda, the castle was besieged. Later, during the English Civil War, the Cavaliers lifted the siege at the Battle of Roundway Down.
