A laminate worktop is a decorative skin on a chipboard core, and every failure it ever suffers comes down to whether that core stayed dry. Around E13 the kitchens are mostly narrow galleys in back additions, where a run has to turn a corner, pass a chimney breast and meet a window reveal within a few metres. Fitting one accurately in that space is a scribing exercise, not a cutting one, and the difference shows within a year.
The wall is the reference, the worktop is not
Terrace walls in this part of Newham are rendered over brick, patched around old flues and rarely straight for a full length. A worktop pushed back against them will touch in two places and leave a wavering gap everywhere else. The method is to set the board level and parallel to the front of the units, mark the wall line onto it with a scribing block held against the plaster, and plane the back edge to that line. It takes far longer than filling the gap with sealant and it is the only version that still looks right after a winter.
Cutting a surface that chips if you look at it wrongly
Laminate chips on the side the blade exits. A jigsaw cutting face up will wreck a finished edge, so the cut is either made from the underside or made with a fine downcut blade, with low-tack tape over the line to support the surface and a slow, unhurried feed. Circular saw cuts are made with the board face down against the bench. Every raw edge is deburred and then sealed, because an unsealed cut edge tucked under an overhang is exactly where water starts its work.
Corners: the mason's mitre and the honest butt
A postformed edge cannot simply be mitred at forty-five degrees, because the rolled front profile would no longer meet itself. The proper corner is a mason's mitre cut on a jig, drawn together from beneath with worktop bolts into machined slots, with the joint bedded in a colourless waterproof jointing compound rather than ordinary silicone. The bolts are nipped progressively from the front of the joint backwards, so the two faces pull level.
The sink cut-out is where worktops die
Almost every swollen, lifting worktop failed at the sink. The aperture is set out from the unit below rather than from the sink template alone, corners are radiused rather than cut square to stop a crack starting, and the whole exposed edge of the cut-out is sealed all round before the sink goes anywhere near it. Clips are tightened evenly, and the bead under the rim is continuous, not dotted. A tap base that has been weeping quietly for months does the same damage more slowly and is harder to spot.
Upstands, tiling and the junction at the back
Where the worktop meets the wall there are two honest options. A matching upstand, scribed to the same wall line and bedded on a thin bead, gives a wipeable junction with a single silicone line at floor of the upstand. Tiling down to the surface gives a better look but needs a flexible joint at the worktop rather than grout, because the two materials move at different rates and grout in that position cracks out within months. Either way the junction is sealed last, after the units have taken a few days of normal use.
What the old surface was covering
Lifting a worktop that has been down for twenty years exposes the tops of the carcasses, the back of the run and the void above the plinth. Crumbs, spillages and a warm cavity behind a stack of units are the classic harbourage in a subdivided terrace, and where there are droppings or runs the matter goes to local specialists before the new surface closes it up again. Swollen chipboard and blackened carcass edges beneath a sink point at a longer-running leak, and the affected finishes are treated by what the service covers.
What a fitting day involves
Charges follow the run length and the number of joints and apertures, since a single straight length is quick and a two-joint L-shape with a sink and a hob is most of a day. Cutting laminate produces a very fine dust that settles on everything in an open-plan room, so cupboards are emptied along the affected run and a post-works tidy-up is often booked alongside through fully insured home cleaning in Newham. Water is isolated before the sink comes out, and the new surface is left unloaded overnight while the joints cure. Kitchens a few streets away are covered by Plaistow handyman specialists, and furniture assembly describes the other small works one visit can take in.
