According to the 2011 census, the town boasted a population of 39,277, making it the third-largest settlement in Fife and the 19th most populous in Scotland. Glenrothes derives its name from its historical connection with the Earl of Rothes, who owned a significant portion of the land upon which the new town was constructed. To prevent confusion with Rothes in Moray and to acknowledge its location in a river valley, the term "Glen," meaning valley, was added to its name. The town's motto, "Ex terra vis," meaning "From the earth's strength," has been in use since its inception.
