Coleford is a market town in the western region of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England. It is situated approximately two miles (3 km) east of the Welsh border and close to the Wye Valley. The town serves as the administrative centre of the Forest of Dean district. Coleford market town in Gloucestershire, England. According to the 2011 census, the combined population of the town's two electoral wards was 8,359. It increased to 9,273 in the 2021 Census, which included the village of Baker's Hill. Coleford was first recorded as Colevorde in 1275. The name is thought to come from the Old English words "col" meaning "coal" and "ford" meaning "a shallow crossing of a river". The town was originally a small settlement at a ford that was used to transport charcoal and iron ore. Coleford grew in importance during the Industrial Revolution, as it was a major center for the mining and smelting of iron ore. The town also became a popular destination for tourists, who were drawn to the area's stunning scenery and abundance of outdoor activities.
