Chester-le-Street or Chester is a market town and civil parish in County Durham, England. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Durham and near Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne. It lies on the River Wear, which runs eastward to the sea at Sunderland. Chester has a long history that goes back to the Romans, who built a fort there called Concangis. The name of the town comes from "Chester," which means "fort" in Latin, and "Street," which is the name of the old Roman road that crossed the town from north to south, now called Front Street. The town has markets on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert is an important landmark that kept the remains of St Cuthbert, an Anglo-Saxon saint, for 112 years before they were moved to Durham Cathedral. The church also saw the first English translation of the Gospels, when Aldred added Old English words between the lines of the Lindisfarne Gospels there.
